Fisher-Price Music and Lights Deluxe Gym, Rainforest Review

Before I started doing my research for this post, I thought that this was called the fisher price jungle. After delving a little deeper I realised that it is actually called the fisher price rainforest. Regardless of its name, it is one of the most used items in our house for the last six months.

We were very lucky that we received the fisher price rainforest as a gift from a friend. When we received it, we had no idea just how much we would use it. Our twins were born very prematurely, you can read the story here. The nurses in the NICU warned us that we should never leave our children on an elevated surface as they could roll off. We heeded their advice and since day one we used the padded fisher price rainforest to lay our babies on the floor.

It is fitted with disco lights and tunes that will do your head in after a while. Don’t get me wrong, the tunes are imperative and they do entertain your child. The only issue is that the selection is very limited and hearing the same song on repeat can become frustrating for parents. Thankfully, there is a rainforest sounds setting. This setting is actually quite relaxing and if you close your eyes you are transported to a humid rainforest. If you are imaginative your lucid dream will be narrated by the soothing tones of David Attenborough.

Here the 12 reasons that you need the Fisher Price Rainforest

  1. It is cheaper than a babysitter

The Fisher Price Rainforest play Mat is a life saver. It means that you can leave your baby entertained while you go about your daily household chores. Need a babysitter? Not anymore the fisher price rainforest play mat is like Mrs Doubtfire and Mary Poppins all wrapped up in a nice little jungley package. Please do not take this point literally. 😉

  2. It is puke proof

Well, I don’t know if it puke proof, but it is puke resistant. If you have a son like mine that is pukaholic, then a non-absorbent play mat is a must. Babies at around six months, love to roll over onto their belly. When the belly is full of food, then they usually puke. The fisher price jungle play mat has a non-porous surface that wipes down easily

  3. It’s robust

This play mat can take a beating. It has a robust frame that can take the pressure of two babies trying to tear it down. All of the materials are durable and the fisher price rainforest play mat is definitely something that you can hand down to the next generation.

  4. The kids learn hand eye coordination

The frame has toys that hang from it. Reaching out and touching the toys teaches your baby hand eye coordination. The jungle comes with an array of colourful toys, textures and materials that will help them learn motor skills.

  5. Floor mat is washable by machine

Even though it is puke resistant, the floor mat still gets dirty. You know how it is, babies omit discharge from every orifice. This all ends up on the mat. Washing it in the machine occasionally is recommended. This will help to keep everything hygienic for your baby.

  6. Easy storage

The Fisher Price Rainforest neatly folds up into a small size that can pretty much be stored anywhere. It takes up very little space when stored and folds back out to a play mat in a matter of seconds.

  7. Three settings for music

This is both a blessing and a curse. There are three settings, twinkle twinkle little star, jungle sounds and some other song that I do not know the name of. The songs are great for the children as the sound keeps them entertained. For the parents, the songs will drive you crazy. See my point in the improvements below.

  8. Disco lights will get your babies party started

On the inside of the frame, there are lights that will attract your babies attention. Combined with the music and toys this will keep your baby’s senses stimulated.

  9. Loads of detachable toys

The fisher price rainforest play mat comes with so many toys for your baby to play with; butterflies, monkey, elephants and a giraffe to name but a few.

  10. Battery lasts forever

We have had the fisher price rainforest play mat for 8 months. We have never had to change the batteries. We have used it every day for several hours and it still runs like clockwork.

  11. This is where your baby will learn to roll over

The fisher price rainforest play mat holds a special place in my heart. I am a dad that remembers milestones and it is where my babies learned to roll over. The fisher price jungle play mat is designed for babies to lie on their back but when the time comes then your baby roll over. The play mat is more than likely where they will learn to do it.

  12. It is big enough for twins

The Play Mat is pretty big, even for one baby, especially for the first six months. If you have twins it is also big enough for both of them to play on and have enough space. After the six months, it gets a little cosier so you will have to upgrade to a bigger play mat.

  1. The tunes will drive you mad

While the music is great for entertaining the children, it becomes very repetitive and will annoy the crap out of you after a while. I can only live with the soothing jungle sounds. The others annoy the crap out of me. Fisher Price, if you read this, add more songs, please!!

  2. Lots of the animals do not actually live in the rainforest

I may be clutching at straws here, but I question the zoologist’s that permitted non-rainforest dwelling animals into the rainforest. If I am not mistaken giraffes live in the Savannas of Africa.

  3. Could be more toys

While there are a lot of toys, there could be a more. It is missing a tiger and a snake for example. A few more animals with different textures would add to the child’s experience.

  4. Mat area could be bigger

The mat area is good for one or two babies up to 6 months. When they start rolling over they will leave the mate. The area outside of the mat could be a bit bigger to accommodate for babies to roll over. If you have no buffer zone outside the mat then your babies will quickly end up on the floor.

All in all, this is a great investment for any parent. It is robust and will last through your babies the first year and beyond. It stores easily and is can be machine washed. You should never leave your babies on a bed unattended and the Fisher price rain forest mat is the perfect place to lay your baby on while you go about your household chores. Overall, it is a great product that I would highly recommend.
